Be Home by Sunrise

From the moment the cellar door slammed shut, Tiffany knew that she was in trouble. The petite vamp was known as a sensual goddess in some circles with her long, brown curls and beguiling brown eyes but two seconds alone with Chase, her much older maker, had her feeling like a guilty adolescent.

“This cannot continue,” Chase snapped at her, grabbing both arms and giving her a firm shake. “Do you understand the concept of being home, safely in your casket, by sunrise? I don’t think so.”

Chase was a tall, solidly built vamp with short blond hair and piercing green eyes. He was over two hundred years old but appeared to be in his late thirties. He didn’t know if this whole maker thing was going to work out in the end. Tiffany was his first child, and nothing in his whole existence as a supernatural creature had ever prepared him for the responsibility of caring for her. Everything she did was a challenge. He swore under his breath, and his fangs ran out. Here came the tears.

Trails of blood leaked down Tiffany’s cheeks at his sharp tone, and her fangs appeared. She quickly dashed the tears away with the back side of her hand. “I’m sorry, Chase. I just lose track of time. It gets so boring here, and I need to be out and about having fun. I’ll try to be home on time in the future.”

Chase tried to control his anger, retracting his fangs. “You won’t have a future if you keep defying me. I’m trying to keep us safe.”

“And I love you for it,” Tiffany said softly, moving closer to stroke his face.

Chase’s tone was cold. “Your love isn’t the issue. I need your obedience.” Seeing her hurt expression, he pulled her into a fierce embrace, stroking her hair. “We’re an hour from sunrise. Into your casket you go.”

They lived in Chase’s older house in an affluent part of Pasadena, California, and had been there for about five years. This was the only home that Tiffany had known as a vampire since Chase had made her around the same time. They slept in the cellar, but it wasn’t a dank, dusty place. Together, they had made the cellar a plush bedroom of sorts with carpeting and big, comfortable caskets to sleep in.

“Can I snuggle in with you?” Tiffany asked plaintively.

Chase lifted the top of his casket and gave a welcoming gesture. She kicked off her heels, and they climbed inside, resting there for a moment on their sides, with him cradling her from behind. As they lay there, he remembered what it was like to hold her as a human, her warmth, and her heartbeat.

Tiffany’s mind was also in the past, recalling Chase’s first fatal bite on her inner thigh after they had made love for the first time. She had been barely twenty-one when she had encountered the blond vamp in a bar in Hollywood. He had seduced her in the back seat of his black SUV, and she had never been the same.
